In Avatar the Last Airbender, the Earth Kingdom is composed of a proud, stubborn, and powerful people. The Earth Kingdom represents the greatest opposition to the Fire Nation. The siege, fall, and later retaking of the Earth Kingdom Capitol, Ba Sing Se, represent some of the most important moments of the Hundred-Year War in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Many mighty heroes come from the Earth Kingdom, but the most powerful of them are the Earth Benders. Some of the most powerful Earthbenders seen in both series include, King Bumi, Toph, and Bolin.

Toph is so powerful that she is able to unlock a side of Earth-bending that was never thought possible before her: metal-bending. This ability becomes and important plot point in both Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Bolin also possesses a unique bending ability known as lavabending.
