In Avatar the Last Airbender, the Water Tribe is actually composed of both the northern and southern tribes, located at the north and south poles (although there are water benders that live in swamps as well). The Southern tribe has been all but wiped out by repeated Fire Nation raids. Despite its small population and lack or industrial infrastructure, the Southern Tribe has produced many heroes that are central to the story. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katara, Sokka, and their father, Hakoda are all from the Southern Water Tribe. In Avatar: Legend of Korra, Korra and her family as well as Varrick are also Southern Water Tribe natives.
